Summer Research Presentation

For the past four summers we've held a summer leadership program that focuses on teaching teens research skills and letting them pick a topic of importance to them so that they can put their new investigative tools to the test. This year the group, which named themselves Y.E.S. or Youth Empowering Society, took on the role of "mentors" within schools and how and why some kids have them and some don't. They had learned that having a mentor was a strong protective factor for Middletown students when looking at academic achievement and felt that even though the topic was a difficult one to tackle in six weeks (or rather the three they had left in the program by the time the selection process had come) it was too important to not do. They explored several key factors such as race, age, and sex as potential barriers for building relationships between students and school staff.
